Saint Ermanno House is a group of three flats housing people with disabilities and/or mental disturbances. It can accommodate up to 18 people in the three residential units. A living space that, while it may be only temporary for some, may represent a definitive solution for others.

The residential complex is located on the edge of the park of Villa Chierici, originally built in the 18th century. The park provides a marvellous array of tall trees in the landscape context of cultivated countryside. The position evokes the typology of the rural residence, which is the reference model used and adapted when drawing up the project.

The client requested us to design a functional building, in which the external and internal spaces can set up an ongoing dialogue, with particular attention to access controls and facilities for surveillance staff.

The plan for the project groups the three residential units around a common courtyard, with trees and some arcades, where daily life can be lived without violating the privacy and autonomy of the single units.

The amply overhanging roof intersected by the three vertical chimneys evokes an archetypal house which protects and guards its inhabitants (a protected home), providing a refuge that is at the same time a launching pad from which to reconquer an environment that pervades every corner of the house, entering through its large windows. The extensive countryside of the Po plain opens to the eyes of those living inside the house, enabling inhabitants to repossess the limitless horizon. From the house to the environment; from the home to the world.
