The project by TECO+partners for the G. Gozzadini Secondary School of Castenaso, Bologna, arises from a wish to reintegrate the constructed environment with the green spaces, on one side the linear park, on the other the sports zone, creating a point of shared attraction between the scholastic community and the town, a place of meeting and sharing.

The composition of the project develops first and foremost through a study of the space, a three-dimensional volume including constructed space and open space, and the search for a balance between plan and volume.

The building is planned around the great central square, a large, mutable volume, animated by changes of level, steps and places for meeting or informal study.

The great lateral windows opening onto the garden and the skylights placed at different heights cause the space to vibrate with natural light, reflected in the parapets in grey metallic material and in the building volume, emphasizing the binocular perspective defining the great hall.

A multi-colour graphic geometric pattern develops over the floor, outlining themes related to didactics.

Looking onto the covered square are more public spaces, administrative offices, the auditorium, the multimedial library and the gymnasium, exploiting the adherence of the external side to the axis of the linear park to ensure independent access, usable outside school hours. The more specialized areas of the laboratories are located on the first floor while the canteen spaces are on the east side, followed by three blocks containing the classrooms and, lastly, the changing rooms for the gymnasium, inserted in independent pavilions to guarantee maximum flexibility of use.

The distribution of the volumes containing the classrooms in pavilions generates a sequence of three green courtyards, creating a strong link between internal and external, and built and natural, environments.

Flexible spaces integrated with the nature of the urban park in the service of the community.

The slight rotation impressed upon the buildings by the project exploits to the full the potentials of the site, improving the users’ sense of wellbeing in the classrooms with the southward exposition of all the façades, combining construction strategies, technologies and materials to optimize energy consumption.
