Bologna Rimesse, student housing

The new student residence on Via Rimesse in Bologna is an urban regeneration project that revitalizes a former industrial area, transforming a space that had been neglected for years, previously occupied by a furniture store and originally used as an ice factory. The project involves the demolition of existing structures, with the exception of two historically significant buildings—the former farmhouse and the old ice factory—preserved to maintain the site’s cultural heritage.

The new building will rise eight floors above ground, housing a modern residence for students with 472 single and double rooms, totaling 533 beds. Designed in an “L” shape, the structure stands out with an architectural grid that creates a dynamic, sculptural effect, visually differentiating the floors and breaking up the building’s rigidity.
Common areas include a green park, a cycling and pedestrian path, a rooftop, and covered outdoor areas, all designed to encourage interaction and socialization among students. This revitalized, accessible outdoor space gives back an essential central gathering area to the city and neighborhood, offering new opportunities for connection and engagement for residents and the local community.

From an environmental perspective, the project stands out for its adoption of energy efficiency criteria and low-impact materials, incorporating technological solutions compliant with LEED Platinum certification.
