New Ice Rink, St. Moritz
From a compositional perspective, the proposal for the new Ice Rink aims to integrate the building into its natural surroundings, evoking the memory and perception of the place while engaging with its seasonal transformations. The rock, the mountain profile, and the irregular dynamism of natural materials shaped by time and weather become sources of inspiration. During winter, snow transforms and softens the building’s appearance, while in summer, greenery takes over portions of the structure, altering its image.
Every design choice seeks to transcend the “building-like” aspect of the structure, turning it into a landscape element that blends seamlessly with its environment. From the southeast view, the building resembles a rocky wall, while from the perspective of the nearby stream, it transforms into a dam that channels and contains the force of water. The concept explores the essence of human intervention, which transforms natural forces into resources for well-being in the process of inhabiting the valley, drawing inspiration from the expressive power of the Alpine context.
A focal point of the project is the corner facing the road, which becomes the compositional pivot of the design. This dynamic element directs attention to the main façade, highlighting its symbolic role as the gateway to the city of St. Moritz.
The building’s interior is organized across multiple levels with a functional mix that includes locker rooms, the skating rink, spectator stands, and a lounge-bar area. The variety of spaces required the design of a clear and engaging connection, guiding users along a smooth and intuitive path. Starting from the entrance atrium, a continuous pathway characterized by a wide staircase connects the main functional areas. This space is not just a connecting element: the spacious volume, abundant natural light, and strong visual identity of the design elements create an environment that transcends mere functionality.
The new ice rink thus stands as an synthesis between architecture and landscape, capable of respecting and enhancing the natural context while offering a spatial and expressive experience.
